Parts, and how they are sourced

Parts are ordered against the model and serial stamped on the plate inside the fresh-food door, never against a description of the appliance. Two cabinets that look identical across a showroom floor can take different fan motors.

The plate is the only reliable identifier

On a built-in the plate sits inside the fresh-food compartment, usually on the upper left wall or behind the top grille on a column. It carries a model number and a serial, and the serial is the part that matters: within one model, running changes to fan motors, control boards and door hardware are tied to serial ranges rather than to the model name.

This is why the first question on the phone is for both numbers. It turns a visit that might need a second trip into one where the likely part is already on the van, and it is the difference between a fault found on Tuesday and a fault fixed on Tuesday.

Superseded numbers, and why the box says something else

A part number printed in a manual from fifteen years ago frequently no longer exists. It has been superseded — sometimes twice — and the current part carries a different number, occasionally a different connector, and now and then a small bracket in the bag to make it fit the older mounting. That is normal and it is not a substitution.

A substitution is something else: a different manufacturer building a functionally similar component. Those go into a cabinet here only with your agreement, and only where the approved part genuinely no longer exists. You will be told which of the two you are getting before it is fitted.

Legacy cabinets and the word discontinued

Older 600 series cabinets are still working in houses around here, and they are still worth repairing. Most of what fails on them — fan motors, defrost heaters, thermistors, gaskets, hinge hardware, drain heaters — remains available. When something genuinely is not, the useful question is whether the cabinet can run correctly without it or with a current-generation equivalent, and that is a judgement about the specific appliance rather than a rule.

What tends to still be available

  • Evaporator and condenser fan motors, including the older shaded-pole types
  • Defrost heaters, thermistors and drain heaters
  • Door gaskets, hinge cams and closer hardware for panelled fronts
  • Water inlet valves, fill tubes and ice maker modules
  • Control boards, though these are the first family to go short

Parts alone are not sold from here. Everything listed above is sourced as part of a repair carried out by this bench, because fitting the wrong component correctly still leaves you with a cabinet that does not work.

Old 600 series in an antique house up on the Post Road, and I fully expected to be told it was time to replace the thing. Instead he rebuilt the door hardware, cleaned a condenser nobody had touched in years, and it runs quieter than it did before.

Cubes had welded into one lump in the bin and the drawer would not budge. The drain was frozen solid behind the liner. He thawed it properly instead of chipping away, then cleared the trough and checked the fall.

The alarm cleared every morning and came back after dark, which made me sound completely mad on the phone. He believed me anyway, fitted a logger, and caught a door switch that only failed once the kitchen cooled at night. Sorted on the second call.
