JennAir built-ins in Saugus

A built-in in a Saugus kitchen is usually working with less room than it would like, and the fault list here is dominated by consequences of that rather than by component failure.

Clearance, and what it costs

Postwar kitchens were laid out for a much smaller refrigerator, so a modern built-in fitted into one is close to a wall on one side, under a worktop, and behind a grille that has been trimmed to fit the cabinetry. The appliance copes until the room is warm and the cabinet is full, and then it does not. That is the shape of most calls here, and it is resolved by restoring airflow rather than by fitting anything.

The mechanical pass, in order

Beyond airflow the sequence is deliberate, because the cheap and likely faults produce the same complaint as the expensive and rare ones. Fans, heaters, sensors, drains and doors are all eliminated before any conversation about a control board or a sealed system, and on a JennAir every one of those parts is straightforward to obtain.

Eliminated in this order

  • Grille, plinth and side clearance, and the condition of the coil behind them
  • Condenser fan draw, then evaporator fan draw, both under load
  • Defrost heater and termination sensor
  • Drain trough, outlet and any heater loop
  • Door, gasket and hinge, tested for contact all the way round

The alarm cleared every morning and came back after dark, which made me sound completely mad on the phone. He believed me anyway, fitted a logger, and caught a door switch that only failed once the kitchen cooled at night. Sorted on the second call.

Old 600 series in an antique house up on the Post Road, and I fully expected to be told it was time to replace the thing. Instead he rebuilt the door hardware, cleaned a condenser nobody had touched in years, and it runs quieter than it did before.

Cubes had welded into one lump in the bin and the drawer would not budge. The drain was frozen solid behind the liner. He thawed it properly instead of chipping away, then cleared the trough and checked the fall.
