Scale, coffee systems and the ice maker
Everything plumbed into a kitchen is on the same water, and scale does not discriminate. If the coffee system is asking to be descaled more often than it used to, the ice maker on the same line is quietly having the same problem.

What scale does to an ice maker
Scale builds in exactly the places an ice maker cannot tolerate it: the inlet screen, the fill tube and the mould. A blinded screen shortens the fill, so the cubes come out small. Scale in the mould stops the harvest releasing cleanly, so the motor buzzes and the batch stays put. Both read as a failed ice maker and both are a water problem wearing a costume.
A machine cleaned and rescaled with the same supply behind it will be back in the same condition within a season. The filtration is the fix; the clean is the tidying up afterwards.
One regime for the whole kitchen
The sensible arrangement is a filter chosen for what the supply actually contains, sized for the combined draw of everything on the line, and changed on an interval that matches the water rather than the manual. That single decision usually resolves the coffee system’s descaling frequency and the ice maker’s cube quality together.
The Saugus check
- Fill volume timed at the ice maker, and pressure measured at the appliance
- Inlet screen and valve inspected for deposit
- Fill tube and mould checked for scale, harvest cycle timed end to end
- Filter type, age and capacity against the number of appliances on the line
- The refrigeration cabinet itself, since a cooling fault often rides along
Descaling and repairing the coffee machine is not work this bench does. The ice maker, the refrigeration and the shared supply are.

Cubes came out half size and far apart. Blocked screen in the inlet valve, so the fill was short. Cleaned, three test cycles, back to normal.

The supply line had been dripping behind the cabinet long enough to swell the toe kick before anyone noticed. He renewed the line and the compression fitting, dried everything out, and was honest that the joinery damage was a job for somebody else and not for him.

Cloudy cubes and a faint chlorine taste all summer. He tested the water, fitted a better filter, and flushed the line back to the shutoff. From the third batch on it was clear and tasted of nothing.
