The coffee system and the cabinet next to it

If your built-in coffee machine and your ice maker started misbehaving in the same month, they are almost certainly telling you about the same thing: the filtered water line they both hang off.

One line, two appliances, one symptom each

In most Newton addition kitchens the plumbed coffee system and the refrigeration column were installed at the same time and teed off the same filtered supply. When flow drops — an exhausted filter, a partly closed shutoff, a saddle valve slowly blinding — each appliance complains in its own dialect. The coffee machine reports a fill or pressure fault. The ice maker just makes smaller, cloudier cubes and spaces them further apart.

Owners rarely connect the two, so they call about whichever annoyed them first. Establishing whether the pressure at the appliance is what it should be takes minutes and settles the question for both.

The shutoff nobody can find

The second recurring Newton problem is access. In an addition kitchen the tee and the isolating valve are often behind a fixed cabinet base or under a floor that went in afterwards, and by the time anybody needs the valve it is either unreachable or seized. That is worth knowing before there is a leak rather than during one.

Worth establishing now, not later

  • Where the isolating valve for the kitchen water line actually is
  • Whether that valve still turns, tested rather than assumed
  • The age of the filter, and whether one filter feeds both appliances
  • Water pressure measured at the appliances, not at a tap
  • Whether the line is copper, braided or plastic, and how it is routed

Repairs to the coffee machine itself — brew group, grinder, boiler, milk system — are not carried out here. What is offered is the supply side it shares with your refrigeration, and the refrigeration itself.

Tight kitchen, built-in sitting in the old pantry opening. He got it out on sliders without marking the floor and replaced a seized condenser fan.

Bottles damp, racks gone musty. The drain tube had come off its spigot inside the cabinet. Reconnected, tray cleaned, interior wiped down. Very tidy.

The maker in the column stopped right after we changed the filter ourselves. The housing was not seated, so the flow switch never saw pressure. Ten minutes to sort, and he did not make me feel silly about it.
