Where slow leaks actually start

Almost never in the middle of a pipe. They start at connections: a compression fitting that was nipped up slightly unevenly, a push-fit that was not fully seated, a saddle valve that has begun to weep around its pierce, or a braided hose whose crimp has started to fail at the collar. All of those produce a drip measured in drops per hour, and all of them are behind something.

The tells are indirect. A musty smell near the cabinet run, a toe kick that has darkened at its lower edge, a floor board with a slight cup to it, or a section of cabinet base that feels soft to a knuckle.

Isolating it, and the refrigeration line

The same tee that feeds a coffee system usually feeds the refrigerator’s ice and water, so a leak investigation covers both. Where a line has to be renewed it is renewed properly — new fitting, correct material, and a serviceable isolating valve left somewhere a person can actually reach next time.

What this bench does not do is put the joinery or the floor back. That is a different trade and you will be told so straight, rather than being given an optimistic answer about drying it out.

What gets checked

• Every connection on the kitchen water line, under working pressure
• The isolating valve, for both position and whether it closes
• The condition and routing of any braided hose or plastic line
• The refrigeration inlet valve, a common slow-leak source in its own right
• The drain path from the cabinet, since water on a floor is not always supply water
