Why an outdoor unit trips
Protective devices on outdoor circuits are doing exactly what they should, and a refrigeration appliance is a demanding load for them. Moisture tracking inside a not-quite-sealed enclosure, an indoor-rated unit exposed to damp it was never built for, or a motor whose insulation has begun to break down will all produce small leakage currents. Add a long cable run and its voltage drop, and a compressor starting under load has a harder time of it than the same appliance would indoors.
The failure people actually experience is silent. The circuit trips overnight, the appliance is off for a day or two in the heat, and the first sign is what is inside it.
What we can and cannot do about it
This bench measures the appliance: insulation condition, leakage from the unit itself, starting behaviour and running draw. That determines whether the appliance is causing the trip or merely revealing a supply problem — a genuinely useful distinction, and one an electrician will want before rewiring anything.
The circuit, the cable run and the protective device are an electrician’s work, and you will be told plainly when the answer sits on that side of the line.
Measured on the appliance
- Insulation resistance and leakage from the unit itself
- Starting current and running draw under real conditions
- Enclosure sealing, and whether the unit is outdoor-rated at all
- Condenser condition, since a fouled coil raises running current
- Whether the trip correlates with the appliance or with the weather
Grills are not repaired here and neither are circuits. What is offered is a measured verdict on the refrigeration, which is usually the piece of information the next trade needs.
