Outdoor ice, drainage and winter
An ice maker in a garden island has two problems an indoor one does not: getting rid of its water, and surviving February. Both are solved at installation or not at all.
- We work
- Outdoor ice and cooling
- We do not
- Grills and burners
- Season
- Drain before the freeze
Drainage decides whether it works at all
An ice machine produces meltwater continuously and has to send it somewhere with a reliable fall. In a masonry island the drain often ends up run to a gravel soakaway or a short stub under the structure, and both silt up. When the drain backs up the bin floods, the ice fuses into a block, and the machine reports a fault that has nothing to do with its refrigeration.
Where a pump is fitted instead, the pump and its reservoir need to be reachable. An outdoor pump behind an immovable stone panel is a repair that costs more in masonry than in parts.
Well water outdoors, and then winter
Where the house is on its own well, the outdoor machine gets the same sediment and hardness as the kitchen one, and typically with less filtration in front of it. Small cubes and a sticking harvest follow. And when the season ends, water left anywhere in the machine or the buried supply run will not survive a Sudbury January.
Twenty minutes in October
- Shut off the supply at the house, not at the island
- Drain the buried run, the reservoir and the machine itself
- Clear the bin, clean it and leave the lid or door propped open
- Clear the drain path and confirm it is empty rather than merely quiet
- Clean the condenser while it is accessible and dry
The grill and its gas train are not this bench’s work. The ice maker and any refrigeration in the island are.

The clean cycle would start and stall halfway through. Drain pump impeller was fouled with scale. He pulled and cleaned it, then suggested a filter interval that suits our water rather than the default one.

Cloudy cubes and a faint chlorine taste all summer. He tested the water, fitted a better filter, and flushed the line back to the shutoff. From the third batch on it was clear and tasted of nothing.

The supply line had been dripping behind the cabinet long enough to swell the toe kick before anyone noticed. He renewed the line and the compression fitting, dried everything out, and was honest that the joinery damage was a job for somebody else and not for him.
