Cabinets in rooms that never expected one

In the older houses a full-height built-in has been fitted into a room whose ceiling height, door width and floor level all predate the concept. Getting the appliance in was an achievement; getting it out for service is the same achievement in reverse. Door swing, thresholds and the route from the kitchen to the nearest exterior door all get established before the day rather than discovered on it.

These installs also tend to sit hard against plaster on at least one side, which is the airflow constraint that shapes most of their faults.

The subdivision kitchens

The later houses are open-plan, and the refrigeration is spread out: a panelled column in the main run, a beverage or wine unit at the end of the island, and very often a second full-size cabinet in the garage. Three appliances, three different ambient environments, and only one of them was specified with the garage in mind.

Water, briefly

Where a Sudbury house is on its own well, the ice maker is the appliance that reports the water quality first. Small cubes, cloudy cubes and a harvest that sticks are all symptoms of the supply rather than the machine, and they are cheap to resolve once that is established.
