Sub-Zero repair in Sudbury

Two housing stocks, two entirely separate sets of appliance problems, and a water supply that quietly connects a third. Sudbury is one of the more varied towns this bench works.

Cabinets in rooms that never expected one

In the older houses a full-height built-in has been fitted into a room whose ceiling height, door width and floor level all predate the concept. Getting the appliance in was an achievement; getting it out for service is the same achievement in reverse. Door swing, thresholds and the route from the kitchen to the nearest exterior door all get established before the day rather than discovered on it.

These installs also tend to sit hard against plaster on at least one side, which is the airflow constraint that shapes most of their faults.

The subdivision kitchens

The later houses are open-plan, and the refrigeration is spread out: a panelled column in the main run, a beverage or wine unit at the end of the island, and very often a second full-size cabinet in the garage. Three appliances, three different ambient environments, and only one of them was specified with the garage in mind.

The usual Sudbury list

  • Beverage and undercounter units in island ends, where ventilation is worst
  • Ice makers running short fills on well-fed supplies
  • Garage cabinets failing in a hard freeze rather than in the heat
  • Condenser fouling from a nearby laundry or a woodstove
  • Door and gasket work on panelled fronts in older openings

Water, briefly

Where a Sudbury house is on its own well, the ice maker is the appliance that reports the water quality first. Small cubes, cloudy cubes and a harvest that sticks are all symptoms of the supply rather than the machine, and they are cheap to resolve once that is established.

Frost was creeping around the drawer rails and the drawer had stopped gliding. He stripped the rails, found a heater wire off its clip, and reseated it. He also flagged the gasket corner letting humid air in.

Old 600 series in an antique house up on the Post Road, and I fully expected to be told it was time to replace the thing. Instead he rebuilt the door hardware, cleaned a condenser nobody had touched in years, and it runs quieter than it did before.

The basement cabinet climbed steadily through the August humidity and simply never came back down again. Its condenser was matted with lint blowing off the laundry side of the room. He cleaned it out and moved the dryer hose well clear of the intake.
