What well water does to an ice maker

An ice maker is a small, precise water appliance bolted into a refrigeration cabinet. It expects a known flow through a known screen at a known pressure. Sediment, iron and hardness all interfere with that in slightly different ways: the inlet screen blinds over, the fill shortens, and the cubes arrive small, cloudy and spaced further apart than they used to be.

Owners generally read that as the ice maker failing. It very rarely is. The productive order is to check the supply, the filter age and the pressure measured at the appliance before anybody opens the module, and on a well-fed house that resolves the majority of them.

Softeners, and the thing people get wrong

A house with a softener has usually had it plumbed to treat the whole supply, and the refrigerator line is taken off after it. That is fine. Where it goes wrong is a bypass left open after service, or a softener that has quietly stopped regenerating, which returns the appliance to raw well water without anything in the kitchen changing visibly. Scale then builds in the fill tube and the mould, and the harvest starts sticking.

The houses themselves

Wayland lots are large, drives are long, and kitchens are generally sized to match. A second refrigerator in a mudroom or a garage bay is normal rather than unusual, and in an unheated garage that unit has a winter problem all of its own — most standard cabinets are not designed to run in ambient temperatures near freezing, and the one that quits in February is often doing exactly what it was designed to do.
