The inventory

The kitchen column or over-under is the appliance everyone thinks of, and it is not usually the one that fails first. That distinction belongs to whichever cabinet lives somewhere nobody looks: the butler pantry unit behind a closed door, the drawer pair at the end of the island, the wine column in the dining room, and the full-size second refrigerator in a mudroom or a garage bay.

Each sits in a different environment. The pantry unit is in still air. The island drawers are surrounded by joinery on three sides. The garage cabinet is asked to run at ambient temperatures the kitchen never sees. Same appliance family, three different working lives, three different failure ages.

Which one goes first, and why

Almost invariably the one with the worst airflow. Undercounter units set into an island run are the most constrained appliances in most houses and they fail earliest — not dramatically, but by drifting a few degrees warm and never alarming, which is why they are frequently discovered by accident during a call about something else.

Legacy cabinets are still worth the parts

Older 600 series built-ins remain in daily use in this town, and there is a persistent assumption that anything that age should be replaced on sight. That is rarely the right call. The mechanical parts are still supplied, the cabinets were built to a standard current appliances are measured against, and the honest comparison is a repair against a replacement that also involves panels and joinery.
